3 unforgettable experiences in Japan with kids

Traveling to Japan with kids was one of the most unique experiences we had. Its culture opened up a plethora of enjoyable and thrilling experiences for the whole family. Ofcourse there were so many experiences we had during our 12-day trip, however, there were some activities that just felt like a core memory and definitely unmissable.

Hi, I am Dimple, mom of two small girls (2 yr and 4 yr at the time), and write all things related to travel with kids- guides, itineraries, tips, and hacks so you don’t have to. This post is dedicated to things most people don't know about Brazil.

The country's blend of tradition and modernity offers varied experiences that cater to all ages. Today I want to talk about the specific experiences that I felt are a MUST with kids and something that promises to leave lasting impressions.

MUST do activities with Kids in Japan

Samurai Experience- Stepping back in time

If you want your kids to learn about Japanese history, especially the culture of Ninjas and Samurai, consider taking them for a Samurai experience. We took our kids for a Samurai Ninja experience in Kyoto, and it turned out to be one of the best experiences we've had so far. It gives kids the opportunity to go back in time and learn about the ancient warriors of Japan.

The best part is that they get to dress up in traditional Samurai armor complete with masks and headgear. They also got to practice sword-fighting techniques, and we all took part in a mock battle using shurikens and katana swords. My older daughter, who is 5 years old, absolutely loved being a Ninja warrior herself, and they all looked so cute!

Do you know why japanese people walk on left? Samurais used to carry their swords on thier left side, thus to avoid bumping into each other swords they started walking on the left

Tips:

  • Look for interactive Samurai experiences that cater to children like Samurai Ninja Museum in Kyoto and Tokyo.

  • Definitely book in advance to secure a spot, especially during peak tourist seasons.

  • Encourage kids to ask questions and engage with the instructors to make the most of the experience.

  • The location was in Nishiki market, so we had an early dinner before we headed for the hour-long experience.

Karaoke Box - Sing your heart out

You thought the Karaoke box was only for adults? Nope, a visit to a Karaoke Box in Japan is a fun experience for kids of all ages. However we had a hard time finding a karaoke box that was non-smoking and allowed kids.

There are Karaoke boxes almost everywhere in Japan especially Tokyo. Shinjuku and Shibuya areas are filled with them. We fortunately found one in Shinjuku that allowed the kids.

We booked the box for an hour and let me tell you the time just flew by! We ordered some drinks while we chose from a vast selection of songs in multiple languages. The kids were playing maracas in the background while singing their hearts out to their favorite songs. It was a core memory!

It was such a private singing session with the family. Kids will love the lively atmosphere and the chance to showcase their singing talents.

Tips:

  • Opt for a family-friendly Karaoke Box which will be hard to find if you are finding them on-spot. One of the known ones in the Rainbow Karaoke which has a built in play area

  • Consider booking a room in advance to avoid long wait times.

  • The prices usually range between 140 -150 yen per 30 mins per person and are cheaper on weekdays.

  • You then need to order at least one drink per person or choose the self-serve soft-drink bar option.

Nara Deer Park- Even the deers bow in Japan

Nara Deer Park is a picturesque location where kids can interact with hundreds of friendly deer roaming freely in the park. They can feed the deer special crackers called "shika senbei," take photos with them, and enjoy the serene natural surroundings. Kids will love the up-close encounters with these gentle creatures.

Tips:

  • Purchase deer crackers from vendors in the park to feed the deer safely. They cost a little over $1.

  • Remind kids to approach the deer calmly and offer the crackers after they bow. My little one held onto the cracker after bowing, and we had a minor accident :)

  • Go during the morning or evening when the deer are active. We went in the afternoon, and most were either sleepy or full from all the morning snacks.

  • The park is free to enter.

  • There are a lot of deer spread around the entire compound, so don't get star-struck on your first deer sight, keep walking and you'll see more.

Kimono Rental - dress up traditionally

Kimono rental in Japan allows kids to dress up in traditional Japanese attire and experience the rich cultural heritage of the country. They can choose from a variety of colorful kimonos, get styled with hair accessories, and stroll around iconic Japanese landmarks for a memorable photoshoot. Kids will love the elegance and beauty of wearing a kimono.

Tips:

  • Check for kimono rental shops that offer children's sizes and accessories. We reserved Maikoya in Kyoto for both tea ceremony and kimono rentals. They were so gentle with dressing up the kids. My kids wore the Kimonos for easy 6 hours without any complaint

  • Make sure to wear your regular shoes underneath, the slippers very slippery to walk for a longer time.

  • Have a light shirt underneath to keep you warm if its chilly

  • You don't need to book in advance. When we were there, kimono rentals were readily available and slightly cheaper than the prices we paid during advance booking. Though we had peace of mind and could plan our day accordingly.

  • Definitely get the hair done at the rental place, it completely changes the look of the entire outfit. You will not regret it! I got it done for my older daughter, and she just took my breath away :)

When you go to Japan next, remember, that you can skip Disney or Lego Land and still have ample to entertain the kids. Drop in comments if you felt guilty missing Disney land and instead opted for a rather different experience for your kids.

HAPPY TRAVELING!!!
